Handyman

Hiring a handyman in Malta: what to ask and the red flags to avoid

A good handyman is worth their weight in gold: the shelf goes up straight, the tap stops dripping and the wardrobe doesn't wobble. A bad one leaves you with holes in the wall and a job half done. Whether you need a TV mounted in Swieqi or a door rehung in a Żebbuġ townhouse, here is how to describe the job, choose well and spot the warning signs early.

Start with a clear task description

The quality of the offers you get depends on the quality of your description. A Hero who knows exactly what's involved can give you a firm price; a vague task gets vague offers, or a price that changes on the day.

What to include

  • Every job on your list, with sizes: "Mount a 55-inch TV and two 80 cm floating shelves" beats "some drilling".
  • The wall type if you know it — limestone, concrete, hollow block or plasterboard all need different fixings.
  • Photos of the area and, for repairs, the problem itself.
  • Whether you've bought the parts or want the Hero to supply them.
  • Access: floor, lift, parking, and anything awkward like a high ceiling.
  • Your preferred dates and whether you're flexible.

Questions worth asking before you book

Use the task's questions or the booking chat to check the details. Good Heroes are happy to answer — it shows you're serious and avoids misunderstandings.

  • What exactly is included in the price? Materials, fixings, removal of packaging and old items, cleaning up afterwards?
  • How long will it take? A realistic estimate tells you they've understood the job.
  • What will you bring? For example, the right drill bits for Maltese limestone and concrete, a stud and cable detector, a ladder.
  • Have you done this before? Ask for photos of similar work, and read their reviews for jobs like yours.
  • What happens if you find a bigger problem? You want them to stop and agree any extra work with you before doing it.

On HomeHero, extra work agreed during a job is added through the booking, so you pay the new amount securely and both of you have a record of what was agreed.

Red flags to watch for

  • Asking to be paid outside the platform or in cash "to save the fee". You lose payment protection and damage protection, and it breaks HomeHero's rules.
  • A large upfront payment before any work starts, outside a booking.
  • A price that's dramatically lower than every other offer, with no explanation. It often grows on the day.
  • Vague answers about what's included, or refusing to commit to a price.
  • Pressure to decide now or to add jobs you didn't ask for.
  • Taking on regulated work they aren't qualified for. Electrical work beyond simple swaps, gas and structural changes need the right trade.
  • No reviews and no profile details, together with any of the above.

On the day and afterwards

  1. Clear the work area and move valuables and fragile items out of the way.
  2. Walk the Hero through each job and confirm the exact position of anything that goes on a wall.
  3. Be reachable — or at home — for decisions that come up mid-job.
  4. Check every item before you approve the job: is it level, secure, working and cleaned up?
  5. Approve the job so the Hero is paid, and leave an honest review to help the next customer.

If something isn't right, tell the Hero first in the booking chat — most issues are fixed quickly. If you can't agree, you can report a problem before approving and our team steps in. Your payment stays protected until then.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a handyman cost in Malta?

On HomeHero, typical offers for handyman tasks range from €40–€150 per job (as of October 2026), depending on how many jobs, materials and access. Bundling small jobs into one task usually gives better value.

Should I pay a handyman in cash?

Pay through HomeHero. Your money is held until you approve the job, and jobs booked and paid on HomeHero are covered by damage protection. Paying outside the platform removes both protections.

Can a handyman do electrical or plumbing work?

Simple jobs like swapping a tap washer or a light fitting are often fine, but new circuits, rewiring and gas work need a qualified tradesperson. Post electrical or plumbing tasks in those categories to reach the right Heroes.

What if the job turns out bigger than expected?

Ask the Hero to stop and explain. Any extra work should be agreed and added through the booking so the price and payment are recorded and protected.

Do I need to supply the materials?

Either works — say which in your task. If the Hero buys materials, agree a budget first and ask for receipts.

Get your to-do list done
