What an AC service actually includes
"AC service" can mean anything from a quick filter rinse to a full clean of the indoor and outdoor units. When you compare offers, check which of these are included so you are comparing like with like:
A thorough split-unit service
- Removing and washing the filters (the part you can also do yourself)
- Cleaning the indoor coil (evaporator) and the fan barrel, where most of the dust and mould builds up
- Flushing the condensate tray and drain line so water drains outside instead of dripping down your wall
- Cleaning the outdoor unit's coil and checking the fan, brackets and cable connections
- Checking that the unit is cooling and heating properly, listening for unusual noise and checking for error codes
- Checking for signs of a refrigerant leak and, if needed, quoting separately for a repair and re-gas
A deep "bag" clean, where the technician wraps the indoor unit in a drip bag and pressure-washes the coil and fan, is the most effective way to remove the black specks and musty smell that build up in units that run all summer. It takes longer, so expect it to cost a little more than a basic service.
How much AC servicing costs in Malta
Prices depend mainly on how many units you have, how easy the outdoor units are to reach and how dirty they are. On HomeHero, typical offers for AC servicing range from €50–€160 for a job, which usually covers one to a few split units. If you would rather have a fixed price straight away, HomeHero Premium AC cleaning starts from €65 for one unit.

Things that push the price up: outdoor units on a high façade or a roof without easy access, ducted or cassette systems instead of wall-mounted splits, units that haven't been cleaned for years, and parking-heavy areas where the Hero has to carry tools a long way. Valletta and Mdina, with their steps and limited vehicle access, are good examples — mention access in your task so offers are accurate.
How often should you service your AC in Malta?
A full service once a year is a sensible minimum for a home unit, ideally in spring before the summer rush. In practice many Maltese households benefit from more:
- Every 6 months if a unit runs most days in summer and as a heater in winter, or if it's in a bedroom used by someone with allergies or asthma.
- Every 6 months for seafront properties in places like Sliema, St Paul's Bay or Marsalforn, where salty air corrodes the outdoor coil faster.
- Every 3–4 months (filter cleaning only) for Airbnb and short-let flats, where guests run the AC around the clock. A full service once or twice a year on top.
- Wash the filters yourself every 2–4 weeks in peak season. It takes five minutes and makes the biggest difference to airflow and running costs.
Signs your air conditioner needs attention now
Don't wait for the annual service if you notice any of these:
- A musty or sour smell when the unit starts — usually mould on the coil or fan.
- Black specks blowing out of the vents.
- Water dripping from the indoor unit, which normally means a blocked drain line or a dirty tray.
- The room takes much longer to cool, or the unit runs constantly without reaching the set temperature.
- Ice on the indoor coil or the copper pipes outside.
- New rattling, buzzing or clicking noises, or an error code on the display.
- Your electricity bill has climbed noticeably without a change in how you use the AC.
When you post a task for a fault, include the brand and model (on a sticker on the side of the indoor unit), roughly how old it is, what happens and since when, plus a photo of the indoor and outdoor units. That lets Heroes tell you up front whether it sounds like a cleaning job or a repair.
What you can safely do yourself
- Switch the unit off and, if possible, at the isolator or breaker.
- Lift the front cover and slide out the mesh filters.
- Vacuum off loose dust, then rinse the filters under lukewarm water from the clean side. Avoid hot water and harsh chemicals.
- Let them dry completely in the shade before putting them back — never refit wet filters.
- Wipe the front cover and louvres with a damp cloth.
- Outside, keep the outdoor unit clear of plant pots, laundry and stored items so it can breathe.
Leave the coil, fan barrel, drain line and anything electrical or involving refrigerant to a professional. Spray-on coil cleaners from the supermarket can leave residue in the drain and rarely reach the fan, which is where the smell lives.
Choosing a Hero for your AC service
When offers come in, look beyond the price. A good offer tells you exactly what is included (filters only, or coil, fan and drain too), whether the outdoor unit is cleaned, how long it will take per unit and whether the Hero brings a drip bag and covers for your furniture. Check their reviews for AC work specifically and ask in the chat if anything is unclear.
Your payment is held by HomeHero until you approve the job, so you can check the units are running properly before the Hero is paid. If you want the same technician every year, note their Hero profile after the job so you can find them again next year.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to service an air conditioner in Malta?
On HomeHero, typical offers for AC servicing range from €50–€160 per job, depending on the number of units, access and condition. HomeHero Premium AC cleaning has a fixed price from €65 for one unit (prices as of October 2026).
How often should I clean my AC filters?
Every two to four weeks during summer, and every couple of months the rest of the year. Clean filters improve airflow, reduce running costs and slow down mould growth on the coil.
Why does my AC smell musty when I switch it on?
Moisture condenses on the indoor coil while the unit cools, and dust plus moisture is ideal for mould. A full clean of the coil, fan and drain tray usually removes the smell; cleaning the filters alone often doesn't.
Is it worth servicing an AC in winter in Malta?
Yes. Many homes use split units as heat pumps in winter, so they work all year. Autumn and early spring are also quieter periods for technicians, so you'll usually get faster offers.
My AC is dripping water inside — is it broken?
Usually not. Most indoor leaks come from a blocked condensate drain or a dirty tray, which a service clears. If it keeps happening after a clean, the unit may not be level or the drain pipe may need re-routing.
