Cleaning

Deep cleaning vs regular cleaning: which one does your home need?

"Cleaning" covers two very different jobs. A regular clean keeps a home that's already in good shape looking that way. A deep clean resets a home that hasn't had that attention for a while — reaching the grease, limescale and dust that a weekly clean skips. Booking the right one means clearer offers, no disappointment on the day and, often, a lower bill over the year.

What a regular clean includes

A regular clean is about the surfaces you see and use every day. It's quick, repeatable and usually booked weekly or every two weeks.

  • Dusting reachable surfaces, shelves and furniture.
  • Vacuuming and mopping floors.
  • Cleaning kitchen counters, the hob, the sink and the outside of appliances.
  • Cleaning the toilet, basin, shower or bath, and mirrors.
  • Emptying bins and tidying.
  • Changing bed linen, if you ask.

What a deep clean adds

A deep clean includes everything above, plus the places that build up slowly:

  • Inside the oven, microwave, fridge and freezer.
  • Degreasing the extractor hood, filters and kitchen tiles.
  • Descaling taps, shower screens, tiles and shower heads.
  • Treating early mould on silicone and grout.
  • Skirting boards, door frames, light switches and handles.
  • Tops of wardrobes, ceiling fans and light fittings.
  • Inside cupboards and drawers (when emptied).
  • Window frames, tracks and shutters; balconies.
  • Behind and under furniture that can be moved.

Side by side

  • Purpose: regular = maintain; deep = reset.
  • Time: a regular clean of a two-bedroom flat might take two to three hours; a deep clean of the same flat can take a full day, depending on condition.
  • Frequency: regular = weekly or fortnightly; deep = once or twice a year, or before and after big events.
  • Price: a regular clean is usually priced by the hour; a deep clean is usually priced by size and condition.
  • Products and equipment: deep cleans often need degreasers, descalers and extra equipment — agree who brings what.

When to book a deep clean

  • You're starting with a new regular cleaner — a deep clean first makes every regular visit quicker afterwards.
  • You're moving in or out (for the move-out version, see our end-of-tenancy guide).
  • After building or renovation work — that's a post-construction clean, with dust in places you didn't know existed.
  • Before the summer short-let season, and after it.
  • After an illness in the household, or before welcoming a new baby or elderly relatives.
  • In spring, to clear winter damp and dust, and in autumn before the rains.

What each type of clean costs

Premium subscriptions for regular cleaning come with a discount for weekly and fortnightly visits, so a recurring plan is usually the cheapest way to keep a home in shape once it's had its deep clean.

A simple cleaning plan for the year

For most Maltese homes, a rhythm like this keeps things under control without overspending:

  • Weekly or fortnightly: a regular clean of kitchens, bathrooms and floors.
  • Monthly: add one deeper task each visit — the oven one month, the fridge the next, then windows and balconies.
  • Spring: a full deep clean, the AC filters and a window clean to clear winter damp and sirocco dust.
  • Autumn: a second deep clean before the rains, with extra attention to bathrooms and bedroom corners where mould starts.

Rotating one deep task into each regular visit spreads the cost and means the twice-yearly deep clean is quicker — and cheaper — when it comes round.

How to book the right clean

  1. Be honest about the condition. A "regular" clean of a home that needs a deep clean leads to a rushed job or a renegotiated price.
  2. Give the size: bedrooms, bathrooms and roughly how many square metres.
  3. List the extras you want: oven, fridge, windows, balcony, inside cupboards.
  4. Say whether you'll provide products and equipment, or want the Hero to bring them.
  5. Add photos of the trickiest areas — the oven, the shower, the balcony.
  6. Check the Hero's reviews for similar jobs, then approve the job once you're happy.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between deep cleaning and regular cleaning?

A regular clean maintains the surfaces you use every day. A deep clean also reaches inside appliances, removes built-up grease and limescale, and cleans skirting boards, fittings, frames and the tops of furniture.

How often should I get a deep clean?

Once or twice a year is typical for a home with a regular cleaner — often in spring and autumn. Also book one when moving, after building work or before starting with a new regular cleaner.

How much does a deep clean cost in Malta?

On HomeHero, typical offers for cleaning range from €60–€180 per job. HomeHero Premium deep cleaning has a fixed price from €90 for a small flat (prices as of October 2026).

Do cleaners bring their own products?

Many do. Say what you prefer in your task — if you want specific or eco-friendly products, mention it or leave them out for the Hero.

Is a recurring cleaner cheaper?

Usually, yes. Regular visits are quicker once a home is in good shape, and HomeHero Premium subscriptions include a discount for weekly and fortnightly cleaning.
