Which jobs need a licence in Malta?

Some categories need a verified licence before a Hero can make offers — for example electrical work and AC servicing.

Some kinds of work are regulated because mistakes can be dangerous. On HomeHero, Heroes need a verified licence before they can make offers, list services or be booked in those categories.

This page is general information, not legal advice. The rules can change and depend on the exact job — if you're unsure, check with the competent authority.

Categories that currently need a licence

  • Electrician — work in this category in Malta generally requires an electrical installer licence (for example licence class A, B or C, depending on the work). Badge: Licensed electrician.
  • AC service — under EU F-gas rules, installing, repairing or servicing equipment with refrigerant gases (such as air conditioners and heat pumps) generally has to be done by certified personnel. In Malta, F-gas certification is handled by the MCCAA. Badge: F-gas certified.
  • Gas work — where a gas category is offered, gas installation generally requires a licensed gas installer.

Plumbing doesn't need a licence on HomeHero right now, but Heroes can upload a plumbing qualification to earn the Qualified plumber badge. HomeHero can change which categories need a licence; the task page always shows the current rule.

For customers

  • On tasks in these categories you'll see: *Only Heroes with a verified licence can make offers on this task.*
  • Look for the licence badge on offers and profiles. HomeHero checked the document; the file itself stays private.
  • If a Hero's licence expires before you book, you can't book that offer — choose another one. We let the Hero know.

For Heroes

  • Add your categories in My profile → Skills. The block Licences for your categories in Certificates & licences shows what you need and its status: Missing, Pending review, Verified or Expired.
  • Click Upload next to a licence — the form is pre-filled. A photo taken with your phone is fine if every corner and the expiry date are readable.
  • We usually verify within 1 business day. You can message customers while you wait; offers unlock as soon as the licence is verified.
  • Add the expiry date. We remind you 30 days before it expires. After expiry, offers and bookings in that category are blocked until the renewed licence is verified.

Doing regulated work without the licence it needs breaks the Hero rules and can lead to suspension. See also How do verification and badges work?
